A community partnership with 3rd Street Youth Center and Clinic to explore mixed race in San Francisco.
Mixed Messages
Part II To be announced...

A seven month exploration process, made possible through the San Francisco Arts Commission Arts & Community: Innovative Partnerships Grant and funded in part by the Zellerbach Family Foundation in association with William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Wallace Alexander Gerbode Foundation, allowed artistic director Raissa Simpson to collaborate with Marlon Sagana Ingram and 3rd St Youth Center & Clinic.

The project takes place after a period of activism in 1997 that changed the state policy of mono-racial classification and led to the rise of identity politics. The process of creating Mixed Messages has shed some light on the grievances and multiplicity of having to claim membership of one race, and essentially having to choose between one’s mother or father. The work is meant to inform of how family dynamics may shape mixed-heritage, how individuals cope with feelings of being a fraud and how hidden identity may bring forth authenticity dilemmas.
