About
THE MOTLEY EXPERIMENT is an evening-length dance was inspired by the vibrancy and social critique of Jazz Modernist and Harlem Renaissance figure Archibald Motley Jr. Through Simpson’s choreography, the work unravels one woman’s hidden life navigating America’s color-line—a story of passing, identity, and survival in a world demanding racial categorization. Drawing from Motley’s vibrant visual language and Jazz Age aesthetics, this piece explores the psychological weight of concealment, the fluidity of identity, and the courage required to exist between worlds.
