Base Resident 2024 Spotlight: gizeh muñiz vengal

Each year we look forward to showcasing the immense talent of global majority artists through our BΛSE (BIPOC Artist Sanctuary & Enrichment) Residency program. This year’s cohort beautifully represents the diversity of dance styles and cultures within our community. It has been an honor to give these residents the opportunity and space to grow in their artistry and teaching capabilities as they lead workshops and produce their final performances.

Meet gizeh muñiz vengal. Originally from Mexico, gizeh’s work elegantly highlights the correlation of our bodies and the Earth. We are elated to bring her thoughtful methodology to our community.

Hometown:

I am from Mexico City, currently residing in Chochenyo Ohlone land

Dance/Movement style(s):

Contemporary dance, experimental dance, improvisation, floorwork

What inspired you to start teaching/choreographing?

I believe that we are living at a very specific time where we are having to remember so many aspects of how to be human. For me, Dance is a technology for contemplating the world through our breathing bodies.

When I speak about Dance, I am referring to a meandering and methodological approach that studies the bodily experience through movement that includes, enhances and transcends the aesthetic purposes of the art form.

Teaching and choreographing have been my form of play since I was really little. It really feels like a service to be doing this: sharing my insights on what it is to be a body in this world through my classes and my choreographic work.

I am pretty drawn and passionate about this. I was inspired by my teachers and the environment of possibilities that was generated while creating. I was so called to create different universes through my dancing and performing;  I feel like this is an antidote from the capitalist imperative of ‘bigger, faster, more’…

What led you to the BASE Residency program?

The opportunity to work more on my teaching skills and develop a clearer methodology that can help my students to understand this technique better.

What do you enjoy about choreographing and/or teaching dance?

Being in the body

What advice would you give to someone who wants to pursue this type of career?

Patience, attention and perseverance. LISTEN!
